A steady number of social work referrals continued to flow in throughout the first few months of 2017 to the point where, having a full caseload, we are in the position of being unable to accept new referrals at present. However, this situation will continue to be assessed and we will announce as soon as referrals are open again. Of the 29 referrals taken since we got up-and-running in May 2016, it’s been interesting to note the source of referrals has been as diverse as a local GP; Catholic schools; St Vincent de Paul; Community Mental Health Service; Catholic parishes of St Thomas More and St Thomas Aquinas; Plunket and various others. It’s great to be reaching out into the wider community.
The Seasons for Growth grief and loss education programme was offered to St Thomas More primary school for the second time, and we have a full group of children enrolled for Term 2. Recognising the benefits for the individual children involved, the school allows the 45 minute sessions to be run during the school day. These children will likely be more active learners in the future as a result of having a constructive way to address the grief and loss issues they are presently confronted with.
The Tauranga pilot of our home-based mentoring volunteer programme L.I.N.K, which offers help with life-skills, information finding, network building and knowledge sharing, is just about to commence. We are currently seeking interested people who may be willing to volunteer as mentors for a few months. If this sounds like you, please click on the L.I.N.K link (lol) for more information and don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions. We would love to welcome you into our team!
